A full-body massage addresses the entire body: back, neck, shoulders, arms and legs, and often the head and feet. An appointment usually lasts 60 to 90 minutes. Nevertheless, many questions remain unanswered before the first visit: What do I take off, what will be massaged, how does it all work? This guide answers all of them, step by step.

What a full-body massage is

The name says it all. A full-body massage involves massaging multiple body regions in one session, not just one. This distinguishes it from partial massages, such as a pure back or neck massage, which focus on one area.

It is based on classic massage techniques: stroking, kneading, pressing, rubbing. Most studios also use massage oil to allow the hands to glide over the skin. Many find a full-body massage deeply relaxing. It can help release tension and clear the mind.

It is offered almost everywhere massages are given: in massage studios, day spas, hotels, or thermal baths. A distinction helps here. Wellness massages like these can be booked freely and without a prescription; they are for relaxation. Medical massages belong in physiotherapy and are prescribed by a doctor. This article describes the wellness variant. Therefore, for pain or health complaints, the rule is: consult a doctor first, then book.

The process step by step

Every studio works a little differently, but the basic pattern is almost the same everywhere:

  • Preliminary talk. Before the massage, the masseuse or masseur asks about your preferences: pressure strength, sensitive areas, areas to be skipped. Allergies to oils or fragrances also belong here. Say everything that is important. After that, it becomes more difficult.
  • Undressing. You undress as much as feels right for you. Underwear usually stays on. Our article What do I need to take off for a massage? explains what is sensible and what you can keep on.
  • Positioning and covering. You lie on the massage table, usually face down first. A large sheet covers you. Only the area being massaged is ever uncovered. This covering technique keeps you warm and maintains your privacy.
  • The massage. It often begins on the back, the largest area of work. This is followed by legs, arms, shoulders, and neck, and depending on the studio, also feet, hands, head, or face. In between, you switch from lying on your stomach to lying on your back.
  • Cool-down. At the end, you get a few minutes of rest on the table. Get up slowly, get dressed without rushing, and drink a glass of water.

Dimmed light, quiet music, and a heated massage table are part of the experience in many studios. You don't have to do anything during it. Talking is allowed, so is silence. But there's one thing you should plan to do: speak up if the pressure is too strong or too weak. That's not an unusual request. Good studios ask on their own.

How long it lasts

Most studios offer full-body massages lasting 60 or 90 minutes. 60 minutes are sufficient to work through all major muscle groups once. With 90 minutes, there is more time per region, for example, for stubborn shoulder areas or a thorough foot and leg massage.

Shorter appointments of 30 or 45 minutes are usually partial massages, mostly for the back and neck. For the entire body, the time would otherwise be too short. Also, plan for buffer time: preliminary talk, changing clothes, and cool-down are added to the pure massage time. A 60-minute appointment can quickly become 75 to 80 minutes in the studio.

For a first visit, 60 minutes is a good start. You'll find out what pressure strength and areas feel good to you, without committing to a long appointment. Next time, you'll know more.

What is massaged and what is not

The standard areas include the back, neck, shoulders, arms, and legs. Many studios also massage the feet, hands, head, or face. The buttocks are included or excluded depending on the studio, often through the sheet. The chest and intimate area are not part of a classic full-body massage.

Each studio sets its exact boundaries, and your own preferences are added. Any area can be skipped upon request; a simple statement in the preliminary talk is sufficient. We have detailed what is customary and what is not: What is not massaged during a full-body massage?

Overview of the most important forms

"Full-body massage" describes the scope, not the technique. Behind it can be very different forms of massage:

  • Classic massage. Also known as Swedish massage. Stroking, kneading, pressing, with oil on the skin. The standard in most studios and the form described in this article.
  • Thai massage. Takes place clothed on a floor mat, without oil. Instead of kneading, it focuses on pressure points and stretches, involving the entire body. Our article How does a Thai full-body massage work? shows what such an appointment looks like.
  • Aroma oil massage. A gentle oil massage with fragrant essential oils. The focus is on calm and sensory experience, not strong pressure.
  • Hot Stone Massage. Also uses heated stones that are placed on or moved over the skin.
  • Chair massage. The device-assisted form of full-body massage. A massage chair performs the movements. More on this in the next section.

When booking, pay attention to the exact name. "Wellness massage" or "Relaxation massage" usually refers to the classic oil massage, but the names are not protected. If in doubt, a quick call to the studio will clarify what to expect.

Full-body massage in a massage chair

Modern massage chairs massage the back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, and feet in one go. Rollers travel along the spine and knead the muscles, while air chambers enclose the arms and legs with pressure waves. You set the programs and intensity yourself. A session is shorter than a studio appointment, but you can repeat it as often as you like.

The practical difference to the studio: You remain fully clothed, no preparation or preliminary talk is needed. You can try this in Hamburg, at the NAIPO Relax Lounge in HafenCity. There, you can test massage chairs in private, air-conditioned rooms, bookable online, without any preparation. And for those who want a full-body massage every day, they can get one with a massage chair directly at home.

After the massage

The appointment doesn't end with the last stroke. Give yourself a few minutes to relax before returning to everyday life. Many studios offer a relaxation area with water or tea for this purpose. Drinking is a good idea anyway; feel free to drink a little more than usual for the rest of the day. Many people don't plan anything strenuous after the appointment and carry the calm into the evening.

Two practical questions almost always arise. The first: Can I shower immediately? With oil on the skin, a little patience is worthwhile; the details are in our article How long after a massage should you not shower? The second: How much tip is appropriate? There's a separate guide for that too: How much tip do you give for a massage?

Some people still feel the massage the next day, similar to a mild muscle soreness. Then give your body a quiet day. If pain persists or worsens, have it checked by a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

How often is a full-body massage beneficial?

There is no fixed rule for this. Some treat themselves to an appointment regularly, others only on special occasions. For persistent complaints, medical advice is the first port of call, not the massage studio.

How much does a full-body massage cost?

The price depends on the duration, region, and studio, and the range is wide. Concrete figures and what influences them can be found in our guide How much does a full-body massage cost?

Do I have to undress completely?

No. You only undress as much as you feel comfortable, underwear usually stays on. During the massage, you are always covered except for the area currently being massaged.

How do I prepare for a full-body massage?

You don't need much. Don't eat a large meal right before and arrive a few minutes early so there's time for the preliminary talk. Mention anything important for the massage, such as sensitive areas or your desired pressure strength.
