Massage types differ in three things: what is used, whether you are clothed, and what the goal is. Everything else is a variation. Here are the common types with techniques, clothing, duration, and what they are intended for. If you're looking for a quick answer: a classic massage is the right choice when a specific muscle is tense. Thai and Shiatsu work on the whole system, not just one spot.
The ten common types
Classic Massage
Also called Swedish massage and the most common form in Germany. It involves working with oil on the skin, using five basic strokes: effleurage, kneading, friction, tapping, and vibration. The goal is to target individual tense muscle groups. You lie on a massage table and are unclothed in the treated area. Usual duration is 30 to 60 minutes. The right choice if you can pinpoint where it hurts.
Thai Massage
Clothed, without oil, on a mat on the floor. Instead of kneading, pressure is applied to specific points, along with guided stretches. Stronger than a wellness massage and for many the most unfamiliar process, as you are passively moved. 60 to 120 minutes. Detailed: traditional Thai massage.
Shiatsu
Japanese form, also clothed and without oil. It involves working with thumbs, palms, and elbows, applying steady pressure along energy lines. Quieter and less stretching than Thai massage. The term also appears in devices: Shiatsu massage cushions imitate the circular movements with rotating massage heads.
Hot Stone
Heated basalt stones are placed on the body and also used as an extension of the hand. The focus is on warmth, and the pressure is rather gentle. Typically 60 to 90 minutes. Not suitable for circulatory problems, inflammation, or nerve damage with impaired temperature sensation.
Foot Reflexology
The foot is divided into zones that are assigned to other body areas. It involves thumb pressure, usually for 20 to 40 minutes. The zone model is an explanatory model and not an anatomical description. Nevertheless, many find it very pleasant as a foot massage.

Sports Massage
Stronger and more targeted than classic massage, focusing on the muscle groups stressed by a particular sport. Short and stimulating before a competition, longer and more relaxing afterward.
Aroma Oil Massage
Technically a classic massage with essential oils. The process is calmer, and the strokes are broader. Because oil is involved, the same applies as with classic massage: the treated area is unclothed, and towels cover the rest.
Lymphatic Drainage
Very gentle, rhythmic strokes designed to support lymphatic flow. Unlike other types, often medically prescribed, for example after operations. Not a wellness program and not a vigorous massage.
Lomi Lomi
Hawaiian form, covering large areas with forearms and plenty of oil, using flowing, long movements across multiple body areas. Often described as particularly enveloping.
Massage in a Massage Chair
The only form without a second person. Rollers move along a track on the back, and air chambers press on arms, legs, and shoulders. The advantage is availability: ten minutes in the evening, without an appointment. What a chair cannot do is stretching and addressing a single spot. All models at a glance.
Which Type for What
- A specific spot is tense. Classic massage or sports massage.
- The whole body feels stiff. Thai massage, due to the stretches.
- You want to relax. Hot Stone, aroma oil, or Lomi Lomi.
- You don't like bare skin contact. Thai or Shiatsu, both clothed.
- You need it regularly and at short notice. Massage chair or home massage device.
- There is a medical indication. Lymphatic drainage or physiotherapy, not wellness.
What Applies Almost Everywhere
Drink something afterward, don't schedule an appointment immediately after a longer treatment, and let them know beforehand if you have pre-existing conditions or are taking medication. For pregnancy, thrombosis, acute inflammation, fever, and fresh injuries, any massage should be medically cleared beforehand.
Brief Summary
- Thai massage and Shiatsu are performed clothed and without oil; all other forms use oil on the skin.
- For a single tense spot, classic massage is the most obvious choice.
- Stretching is only available with Thai massage; no device can replace it.
- Lymphatic drainage is a medical application, not a wellness massage.
- A massage chair does not replace any type; it supplements them with availability.
