As a general guide: the operated area remains untreated as long as the wound is not closed and irritation-free, usually for several weeks. Other body areas may often be massaged sooner. Clearance comes from the treating doctor, not from a guide. Here's what's important to know.
Why the waiting period is not universal
After an operation, three things happen simultaneously: the wound closes, the tissue underneath remodels, and the circulatory system is stressed during the first few days. Massage interferes with all three. It increases blood flow, moves tissue, and can shift swelling. This is desirable later but risky early on.
Additionally, and most importantly: after many procedures, the risk of thrombosis is increased, often for weeks. Massage of the legs should then explicitly be performed by a doctor, not by oneself.
The three time windows
- The first few days. No self-massage, not even on distant body parts, as long as you are still hospitalized or under close supervision. What is medically necessary, such as lymphatic drainage or respiratory therapy, is ordered by the hospital.
- After wound healing, usually two to six weeks. Areas far from the incision are often possible again. An example: after shoulder surgery, the feet; after abdominal surgery, the neck. Asking beforehand remains mandatory.
- After complete healing, often from three months. The operated region also becomes an option again, then usually with targeted scar work by a specialist, not with a device.
For major surgeries on the heart, blood vessels, or spine, these windows shift significantly backward.
What remains taboo in any case
- Fresh scars and the surrounding area, as long as they are red, swollen, or sensitive.
- Drains, catheters, ports, and their surroundings.
- Legs with an increased risk of thrombosis, without medical clearance.
- Any area that is warm, red, and tender to the touch. This could be an infection.
Warning signs where nothing should be massaged, but a call should be made: fever, increasing wound pain, oozing from the wound, unilaterally swollen calf, shortness of breath.
What about massage chairs or foot massagers?
The same logic applies, with an additional limitation: a device cannot omit a single spot. A massage chair works with rollers along the entire spine and with airbags on the arms, hips, and legs. If you have a fresh scar on your back, you cannot exclude your back.

- Move as much as cleared. Getting up and walking are the most effective thrombosis prevention.
- Wear compression stockings as long as they are prescribed, even if they are bothersome.
- Have cleared areas treated. Tense shoulders after two weeks in bed are real and can often be treated early.
- Care for the scar if cleared by the practice. Usually after complete wound healing, with gentle shifting instead of pressure.
