In Germany, an hour-long massage usually costs between 60 and 110 Euros. There are outliers at both ends, and three things explain almost every difference: duration, type, and location. Here are the usual ranges, what drives the price, and when a home device pays for itself.
Typical Ranges
Guidelines for privately paid treatments, not fixed prices. In large cities, prices are at the upper end, in rural areas at the lower end.
- Partial massage, 20 to 30 minutes, e.g., back or neck and shoulders: approx. 30 to 55 Euros.
- Back massage, 45 minutes: approx. 50 to 80 Euros.
- Full body massage, 60 minutes: approx. 60 to 110 Euros.
- Full body massage, 90 minutes: approx. 90 to 150 Euros.
- Thai massage, 60 to 120 minutes: approx. 60 to 140 Euros, as it usually takes longer.
- Hot Stone or aromatherapy oil, 60 to 90 minutes: approx. 80 to 150 Euros, the effort is higher.
- Massage in a hotel or day spa: significantly higher, here you are paying for the ambiance.
What drives the price
- Duration. The biggest single factor. The price per minute usually decreases slightly: 90 minutes rarely cost one and a half times as much as 60.
- Training. A trained masseuse and medical bath attendant will charge more than a wellness therapist with short training, and rightly so.
- Effort per treatment. Hot Stone requires preparation and follow-up, which is included in the price.
- Location. A practice in a city center location includes its rent in the price. Mobile masseurs who come to you often charge a travel fee.
When health insurance pays
Only with a doctor's prescription and only for medically recognized treatments such as classic massage therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, or physical therapy. Then the statutory co-payment is due, usually one-tenth of the costs plus a fee per prescription. Health insurance does not cover wellness massages. If in doubt, ask your health insurance provider in advance, as regulations differ.
The calculation for home use
The comparison is worthwhile as soon as massage is no longer a special event, but a habit.
Someone who goes for a massage every two weeks for 70 Euros pays about 1,800 Euros per year. A massage device for the neck and back costs significantly less than 200 Euros once, while a massage chair, depending on its features, ranges between 698 and 8,690 Euros. With weekly use, a mid-range chair pays for itself after one to two years.
What the calculation doesn't cover: A device doesn't focus on a single spot and doesn't stretch. However, it's available at ten in the evening, without an appointment. Both have their place.
