Oshibori touch guests' hands and faces and are stored warm and moist. Both of these factors make them a point where hygiene is not a side concern, but must be described and adhered to. The three crucial points are washing temperature, storage time, and the separation of clean and used.

Why warm and moist is the critical state

Germs multiply fastest at body temperature and with sufficient moisture. A warm towel dispenser creates precisely these conditions, and this is intended, as long as the towels are used quickly.

Problems arise when towels are left in the warm device for hours or overnight. This is the most common mistake in everyday life and, at the same time, the most avoidable.

Washing

Washing is done at a high temperature with a detergent suitable for textiles in the food sector. Fabric softener is omitted for two reasons: It reduces absorbency and leaves a film in which residues can remain.

The towels are then completely dried before storage. Cotton stored moist quickly smells musty, and this smell will not go away.

The separation of clean and unclean

  • Separate containers for fresh and used towels, visibly differentiated.
  • Separate paths in the process: Whoever collects used towels does not then reach into the supply.
  • Hand hygiene during insertion. The towel is touched by hand last after washing, and this hand determines its condition.

The dispenser helps at this point: From an open tray, one reaches into the supply by hand; from a device, exactly one towel comes out. The designs are discussed in the article Warm towel dispensers: Selection and operation.

How long a towel can remain in the device

As a rule of thumb: What is left at the end of service is not kept warm until the next day. It goes into the laundry, even if it looks unused.

Within a service, the circulation is uncritical, as long as the towels are actually used. If you regularly insert more than is used, you have chosen too large a dispenser or replenished too early.

Documentation

Businesses with a self-control concept based on common hygiene principles should best manage towel circulation as a separate item: washing temperature, dispenser cleaning interval, and the end-of-day rule. Three lines are sufficient, but they should be in writing.

The reason is not control, but transfer. A process that exists only in one person's head ends with their vacation.

Disposable as an alternative solution

Where no washing logistics can be set up, pre-moistened disposable towels are the more honest choice. They feel less pleasant and generate waste, but they have no circulation that can go wrong.

The comparison of both methods is in the article Buying Oshibori towels. Equipment for multi-use operation can be found under CalmConcept, for example, the Warm towel dispenser ASP-SRX130T-C.

The three most common mistakes in everyday life

  1. Towels left overnight in the warm device. By far the most common and with the clearest consequences.
  2. Fabric softener in the wash cycle. Reduces absorbency and leaves a film in which residues can remain.
  3. Moist stored goods. Cotton that is not completely dried before storage will smell musty after a few days, and this smell will not go away.

All three cost nothing to prevent and a lot to remedy, because in the end, the entire stock has to be replaced.
