When purchasing Oshibori towels, the circulation volume is almost the most important factor. If you order too few, you'll be washing daily and still won't have dry towels in the cupboard. As a rule of thumb, calculate three to four times your daily requirement, so that one set is in use, one is in the wash, and one is in storage.
Accurately estimating daily needs
The requirement is not the number of guests, but the number of servings. In gastronomy, this is usually one towel per guest; in wellness facilities, it can be two or three per treatment.
Newcomers should count for a week before placing a large order. This week will save more money than any volume discount, because misjudgments with textiles are expensive and cannot be returned.
Disposable or reusable
- Disposable is pre-moistened and packaged, requires no laundry logistics, and no dispenser. However, it generates waste per guest, and the towels are usually made of non-woven fabric instead of cotton.
- Reusable is the original Japanese cotton towel. It offers a significantly better feel on the skin, is cheaper in ongoing operation, but requires washing and a hot towel warmer.
The dividing line is regularity. If you serve daily, reusable towels become cheaper after a few months. If you only serve on special occasions, disposable towels are a better choice.
Five details before ordering
- Size. It must fit the dispenser. A towel that is too large cannot be neatly rolled and inserted.
- Material. Pure cotton. Blended fabrics lose their absorbency faster.
- Weight per unit area. Medium values are most practical in operation because they retain heat and still dry quickly.
- Color. White immediately shows dirt and can be treated with bleach. Dark towels conceal stains, which is not an advantage when it comes to hygiene.
- Reorderability. A towel that is no longer available in two years forces a complete change, as old and new stock look different.
What the price per towel doesn't tell you
The unit price is the wrong measure for comparison. The decisive factor is the price per serving over the lifespan. A towel that withstands three hundred washes is significantly cheaper, even at double the purchase price, than one that becomes threadbare after one hundred washes.
In addition, there are ancillary costs: detergent, electricity, labor time. These arise regardless of towel quality, but with durable towels, they are spread over more servings.

The most costly mistake
Ordering too few. If you only have double your daily requirement, you'll be washing every evening and still have damp towels in the morning because cotton needs time to dry. The result is musty towels and a washing machine running daily for small quantities.
The second most common mistake is ordering towels and dispensers sequentially. If the size doesn't fit the compartment, one of them is a bad purchase. Both should be selected together, and the order doesn't matter as long as they are decided together.
