An Oshibori towel is a small cotton terry cloth, moistened and served tempered. Three things are crucial for quality: the fiber quality of the cotton, the basis weight, and the edge finishing. Everything else is additional features.
Why Cotton and Nothing Else
Cotton absorbs many times its own weight in water and releases it when wiping. Synthetic fibers cannot do this: they distribute moisture instead of absorbing it, and feel cooler and smoother on the skin.
In addition, there is temperature resistance. An Oshibori is served warm and washed at high temperatures during use. Cotton withstands both for hundreds of cycles, while blended fabrics lose their absorbency faster.
Sizes and What They Mean
- Approximately 20 by 20 centimeters. The small format for quick access, common in gastronomy for meals.
- Approximately 30 by 30 centimeters. The most common format. Sufficient for hands and face.
- Larger than 30 centimeters. Found in wellness areas and cosmetics, where more surface area is needed.
A simple rule applies to the choice: the towel must fit the dispenser. Warm towel dispensers have a fixed compartment, and a towel that is too large cannot be stored neatly rolled inside.
Basis Weight and Feel
The basis weight is given in grams per square meter. Light towels dry faster and appear thin, while heavy ones feel high-quality and retain warmth longer. For gastronomic use, the usable range is in the middle, because very heavy towels take a long time to dry, thus increasing the circulation quantity.
A simple test in the shop: moisten the towel, wring it out, pull it over the palm of your hand. If the hand remains damp instead of clean, the fabric does not absorb enough.

Care and Lifespan
Oshibori are washed at high temperatures because they come into contact with hands and face. Fabric softener is not used: it coats the fibers and reduces precisely the absorbency that makes the towel valuable.
A good cotton towel can withstand several hundred washes before becoming threadbare. Visible signs for replacement are frayed edges, thinning center, and a grey film that can no longer be washed out.
Disposable or Reusable
Disposable towels are pre-moistened and packaged, requiring no logistics, but they generate waste per guest and feel different because they are usually made of non-woven fabric. Reusable cotton towels are the Japanese original and significantly better in effect, but require washing logistics and a dispenser.

Four points that can be checked without a laboratory: The edges are hemmed and not just overlocked. The fabric is the same on both sides. The dry towel smells of nothing. And it does not feel worse after the first wash than before.
