In the wellness area, a warm towel serves a different purpose than in gastronomy. There, it cleanses the hands before a meal; here, it marks the beginning and end of a treatment and removes oil or product residues. This leads to different sizes, quantities, and procedures.
The Three Usage Points
- At the start of the treatment. A warm towel over the hands or neck signals that daily life now ceases. The effect lies in the announcement, not in the cleansing.
- During the treatment. For removing oil, masks, or peels. Here, absorbency matters more than warmth.
- At the end. A final warm towel before the guest sits up. It concludes the treatment more clearly than spoken words.
Different Sizes Than in Gastronomy
In gastronomy, a towel of about 30 by 30 centimeters is sufficient for hands and face. In cosmetics and massage, larger formats are needed because backs, legs, or the entire face are covered.
This has implications for the dispenser: Larger towels require more vertical space, and the capacity in pieces decreases accordingly. Quantities and Circulation
Two to four towels are used per treatment, significantly more than per guest in gastronomy. The circulation is thus the cost factor, not the purchase price of the towels.
As a rule of thumb, one calculates with three to four times the daily requirement of towels, so that one set is in use, one in the wash, and one in the cupboard. With three towels per treatment and twelve treatments per day, this quickly amounts to over a hundred pieces.
Oil and Washing
Massage oil is the big difference from gastronomy. It embeds itself in the cotton fibers, is not completely dissolved during a normal wash cycle, and can spontaneously ignite in a hot dryer.

Therefore, oil-laden towels should be washed separately, at high temperatures, and with a detergent that dissolves grease. And they should not be left warm and folded in the dryer. This is a real cause of fires in laundries and not a theoretical risk.
Fragrance, Yes or No
In the wellness area, it is common to perfume the moistening water. Two caveats apply: The scent must not clash with the treatment product, and it must be compatible with people with sensitive skin.
