A fragrance in an oshibori is an addition, not a component. The Japanese original comes without it, and in many establishments, the neutral towel is the better choice. However, if you do use perfume, use a very small amount, as warmth significantly enhances any scent.
Why Warmth Enhances Everything
Essential oils evaporate faster the warmer they are. A drop that is barely perceptible on a cold towel will fill the space in front of the guest's face on a warm towel.
This leads to the most important rule: what smells pleasant on a cold towel is too much on a warm one. Therefore, always dose on a warm towel, not a cold one.
Which Scents Work
- Citrus. Lemon, yuzu, bergamot. Creates a fresh feeling, suitable before meals and is the classic direction.
- Green tea. Subtle, Japanese, fits almost anywhere and doesn't interfere with food.
- Lavender. Calming, suitable for wellness areas, but not before meals.
- Eucalyptus and mint. Very prominent. Works in a spa after exercise, but is almost always too much at the table.
What doesn't work are sweet and heavy notes. Vanilla and floral fragrances can quickly become overpowering on a warm, damp towel.
How to Dose
The fragrance goes into the moistening water, not on the towel. One to two drops of essential oil per liter of water is the starting point, and that is less than most people assume.
Oil and water do not mix by themselves. The water should be stirred before each immersion, otherwise the first towel will get everything and the last will get nothing. For more precision, use a water-soluble fragrance concentrate instead of pure oil.

When to Better Abstain
In gastronomy, the scent competes with the food. A sommelier will reject any perfumed oshibori before a wine pairing, and rightly so: the smell on one's hands accompanies the entire course.
In the wellness area, the fragrance can clash with the treatment product. And generally: for guests with sensitive skin or fragrance allergies, a neutral towel is the only safe choice, and you don't know these guests beforehand.
In Operation
Fragrance additives will leave residues in towels and equipment over time. Both should be part of the cleaning schedule: wash towels regularly without additives, clean equipment as usual.
And a practical recommendation: if you use perfume, work with a single scent and do not change it seasonally. Recognizability is more effective with smells than variety. What else belongs in the circulation can be found in the article Oshibori and Hygiene.
The Alternative
Instead of perfuming the towel, the fragrance can be introduced into the room. This cleanly separates the two: the guest smells the atmosphere, but not their own hands all evening.
For the towel itself, the quality of the fabric remains paramount, and that determines the impression more than any additive anyway. Suitable products can be found under CalmConcept, for example the towel roll, and the material question is discussed in the article Oshibori Towels: Material and Care.
A Note on Essential Oils
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts and not harmless additives. Undiluted on the skin, they can irritate; citrus oils can make the skin more sensitive in conjunction with sunlight.
For use in towels, this means: dilute heavily, only use food-grade or cosmetic-grade oils, and if in doubt, omit them. A neutral towel is never wrong, a heavily perfumed one often is.
