A full-body massage treats all major body regions in one session: back, neck and shoulders, arms, legs and feet, usually also glutes and abdomen. Typically lasting 60 to 90 minutes, in Germany it usually costs between 60 and 150 Euros privately. Here's what actually happens, what forms there are, what you should pay attention to, and when it's not the right choice.
What makes it different from a partial massage
The difference is not just the area covered. A 30-minute back massage works on one spot, usually because something is bothering you there. A full-body massage follows a fixed routine across the entire body, without dwelling on one spot. The goal is less about relieving individual tension and more about the state afterwards.
This leads to a practical consequence: if you can pinpoint exactly where it hurts, a partial massage is often the better choice. A full-body massage is worthwhile when everything feels stiff and you can't point to a specific spot.
Which regions are treated
The usual scope, varying slightly from studio to studio:
- Back from pelvis to neck, usually the longest section
- Neck and shoulders
- Arms and hands
- Legs front and back, plus feet
- Glutes, in many studios only upon request
- Abdomen and chest, often only with explicit consent
Intimate areas and breasts are not treated. Towels cover everything that is not currently being worked on. A separate article provides detailed answers: which massage truly massages everything.
Comparing the forms
Full-body massage is a collective term, not a specific procedure. These four are the most common you'll encounter:

- Classic, also called Swedish. With oil on the skin, using five basic strokes. The standard in Germany.
- Aromatherapy oil. Technically the same massage, performed more calmly, with essential oils.
- Thai. Clothed, without oil, using sustained pressure and stretches. A completely different process: traditional Thai massage.
- Lomi Lomi. Hawaiian, broad strokes with the forearms, in long flowing movements.
All types are listed side-by-side in the overview of massage types.
Duration and price
Sixty minutes is the usual length and sufficient for a complete session. Ninety minutes allow more time for each region, especially the back. Under an hour, there isn't enough time for the whole body, making it effectively a partial massage.
Prices for 60 minutes typically range between 60 and 110 Euros, and 90 minutes between 90 and 150 Euros. In large cities, it's at the higher end, and even higher in hotel spas. A detailed calculation, including a comparison with a device for home use: what a massage costs.
What you should know beforehand
Don't eat directly beforehand. At the beginning, mention any complaints you have and which areas you'd like to omit; this is normal, and no one will question it. Drink something afterwards and don't schedule an appointment immediately following the massage. The specific process, from reception to post-massage rest, is described here: how a full-body massage proceeds. What you wear and what you take off: what to take off for a massage.
When it is not suitable
Consult a doctor beforehand if pregnant, with thrombosis or suspected thrombosis, acute inflammation, fever, recent injuries and surgeries, osteoporosis, or if taking blood-thinning medication. This is not a formality; in these cases, the body reacts differently.
What you can do at home
A massage chair covers a large part of the same area in ten minutes: rollers move along a track on the back, air chambers work on arms, legs, and shoulders. What it cannot do is focus on a single spot or stretch. However, it is available at ten in the evening, without an appointment.
The honest comparison: A device doesn't replace hands, but it complements them with availability. Those who want regular massages will benefit most from both. The models are listed in the overview, and free test sitting is available at over 40 locations.
Brief summary
- A full-body massage treats all major regions in a fixed sequence, typically lasting 60 to 90 minutes.
- Intimate areas and chest are excluded; towels cover what is not currently being worked on.
- Privately paid, it usually costs between 60 and 150 Euros, depending on duration and location.
- For a clearly identifiable tension, a partial massage is often more sensible.
- Pregnancy, thrombosis, acute inflammation, and recent injuries should be medically clarified beforehand.
