Hand Massager Test: what to look out for

Stiftung Warentest has not conducted a test of hand massagers. What can be found under this keyword are comparison portals that list manufacturer specifications side-by-side. Those who want to compare for themselves need five criteria, and none of them are usually found in the data sheet.

Why ranking lists are of little use

Comparison sites sort according to information provided by the manufacturer: number of air chambers, programs, wattage. None of these figures indicate how the device feels on the hand. Two devices with the same number of chambers can apply different pressure because the cuff is cut differently.

The term "test winner" is legally permissible as long as it is not attributed to the foundation. Such overviews are useful as a market overview, not as a judgment.

First: the fit

The most important criterion and the least often mentioned. Large hands may not fit into some devices. And a device whose opening ends at the finger knuckles precisely excludes the joints that are the focus of most complaints.

Before buying, it's worth looking at the internal dimensions, not the external dimensions. If they are missing, that's a warning sign.

Second: one-handed operation

The device must be started with one hand while the other hand is inside. Buttons that require two hands, or a remote control that cannot be placed next to you, make daily use cumbersome.

Third: pressure levels instead of programs

  • Adjustable intensity is more important than the number of programs. Those with sensitive joints need a low setting that is actually low.
  • Switchable heat. For inflamed joints, heat should be avoided, so it should have its own button.
  • Timer. Ten to fifteen minutes are enough, and a device that stops by itself prevents overdose.

Fourth: volume, fifth: cleaning

Air pumps operate audibly. A device that you want to use casually in the evening should be quiet enough to watch TV next to it. This information is almost always missing and can only be gathered from customer reviews.

And the inner lining absorbs skin oils. Removable or wipeable covers are not a luxury, but the difference between a device that is still used after two years and one that ends up in the cupboard.

How to read reviews correctly

Reviews that mention hand size and complaint are meaningful. A review without this information says little, because the same device fits completely differently on a large hand compared to a small hand.

The middle-range reviews are particularly useful. They usually state both what is liked and what is disliked, whereas the highest and lowest scores often only show one side.

An overview of the different types of devices can be found under Massage Devices. Which type of device is suitable for which complaint is outlined in the Device Finder, and what a hand-held device can fundamentally do is explained in the article Hand Massager: what it can do.

Self-test in five minutes

A hand massager can be quickly assessed if you know what to look for. Place your hand inside, select a medium setting, and answer three questions.

  1. Do your finger joints sit inside the device or do they protrude? If they protrude, the device is too short for that hand.
  2. Is the pressure still comfortable after five minutes? What feels good at the beginning can be too much after a few minutes, because the pressure builds up in air chambers.
  3. Can the device be switched off with your free hand, without looking? If not, it will be annoying in everyday use.

What the price really changes

There is a multiple difference between a simple vibration device and a fully equipped cuff. The extra cost primarily pays for a cleanly cut cuff, a quieter pump, and a washable cover. You usually don't get more power for this, and on the hand, more power wouldn't be an advantage anyway.
