Complaints from typing and mouse use are felt in the hand, but their cause usually lies in the forearm. The muscles that move the fingers are located there and extend via long tendons all the way to the fingertips. If you only massage the hand, you are treating the end of the chain and neglecting the beginning.
What actually works when typing
The fingers themselves only have small muscles in the hand that spread and bring them together. Everything that involves strength comes from the forearm: the flexors on the inside, the extensors on the outside.
When typing and holding a mouse, the extensors are primarily and constantly slightly tensed, as they keep the wrist stable. This continuous tension without movement is more strenuous than vigorous work with breaks.
The three key areas
- Extensor side of the forearm, a hand's width below the elbow. In almost everyone who spends a lot of time at the computer, this area is pressure-sensitive.
- Flexor side of the forearm, at the same height. Tends to complain more during strong gripping than during typing.
- Thumb pad. Works with every mouse click and is stiff in frequent clickers.
How these areas are treated is described in the article Performing a hand massage yourself. The order is important: forearm first, hand afterward.
What a device can do here
A hand massager reaches the hand, but not the forearm. For the forearm, a massage gun with a soft attachment, a handheld device, or simply the thumb of the other hand can be used.
If you want to cover both, two tools will get you further than one expensive one. Which attachments are suitable for muscle bellies and which are not is described in the article Massage gun attachments.

What brings more than any massage
Tension arises from holding without movement. Anything that brings movement back addresses the cause instead of the symptom.
Specifically, this means: fully opening and closing the hand once an hour, rotating the wrist, and shaking out the forearms loosely. In addition, a workplace where the forearm rests rather than floating freely, and a mouse that is not too small. A device releases the tension that the day has brought in. It does not prevent it from accumulating.
When it's not a case for self-treatment
In case of numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers, especially at night, the cause should be investigated. This can indicate a compression of the median nerve at the wrist, and no massage will help with that.
The same applies to loss of strength, pain that increases over weeks, and swelling at the wrist. In all three cases, the order is the same: first clarify, then decide. The general limits are described in the article Are massage devices dangerous, and the types under Massage devices.
Why the term mouse arm is misleading
Mouse arm is not a diagnosis, but a collective term for complaints that occur when working at the computer. Very different things can be behind it: an irritated tendon insertion at the elbow, tense forearm muscles, nerve compression at the wrist, or a problem that actually originates from the neck.
This is why general advice is of little use here. Anyone who has had complaints for weeks will save time by having them assessed once, instead of trying four different aids one after another.
More comes from the neck than you think
The nerves for the arm and hand originate in the cervical spine. Irritation there can manifest as tingling or weakness in the hand, without anything being found in the arm itself.
Those who sit at the computer have both at the same time: tense forearms and a forward head posture. Therefore, treating the neck area is often the more effective half. What helps there is described in the article Neck massager against text neck.
