A hedgehog ball costs little, fits in any drawer, and is surprisingly effective for the hand. It works with many small pressure points simultaneously instead of one surface, and because it is rolled, the stimulation is distributed naturally. For beginners, it is the most sensible aid available.

What the ball actually does

The nubs apply pinpoint pressure to the skin and superficial muscles. This increases blood circulation and creates a distinct tactile stimulus that requires little force: body weight or light hand pressure is sufficient.

Unlike kneading with the fingers, the massaging hand hardly has to work. This is precisely why the ball is suitable for people whose grip strength has diminished.

Size and hardness

  • Six to eight centimeters is the usable size for the hand. Smaller ones slip away, larger ones cannot be rolled between the palm and the table.
  • Soft for beginners. A hard ball with sharp nubs can quickly be too much for sensitive skin. Soft rubber balls are more pleasant and still effective.
  • Smooth balls for anyone who finds the nubs uncomfortable. They work more broadly and are better for thin skin.

Four exercises for in-between

  1. Rolling on the table. Place the palm on the ball and roll the ball back and forth under the hand. One minute per hand.
  2. Circling the thenar eminence. Place the ball under the fleshy part of the thumb and make small circles. This is the most common tight spot in the hand.
  3. Between the hands. Take the ball between both palms and circle it. Massages both hands simultaneously without one having to work.
  4. Squeeze and release. Soft ball, squeeze ten times. This is no longer a massage, but strengthening, and is an important part of the routine.

Which zones are meant is explained in the article Hand massage: the most important points.

Where the ball reaches its limits

It reaches the palm well, the back of the hand poorly, and the individual fingers not at all. It also needs a hand to guide it and a table as a counterpoint.

For those who have both hands affected simultaneously or lack the strength to guide it, a cuff into which the hand is placed is more helpful. The difference is described in the article Hand massager: what it can do, and the types are listed under Massage devices.

When not to use the ball

With inflamed, warm joints, open or torn skin, and fresh bruises. For thin aging skin, the nubbly ball is replaced by a smooth one, as pinpoint pressure there promotes skin injuries.

And as with any massage: tingling into the fingers is not a sign of effectiveness, but an irritated nerve. In this case, the area should be avoided, and the cause should be clarified by a doctor.

The ball as strengthening instead of massage

A soft ball does something else: squeezing and releasing it trains grip strength. This is no longer a massage, but an exercise, and precisely for that reason valuable. Massage loosens, exercise builds up, and both together are significantly more effective than one alone.

Ten to fifteen repetitions per hand are sensible, without going to exhaustion. For joint problems, this exercise should be discussed beforehand, as pressure on an irritated thumb saddle joint has the opposite effect.

Why the ball also works in care

In the activating care of older people, the hedgehog ball is a classic, and the reason is not its price. It can be given into the hand without anyone having to explain anything, it encourages self-movement, and the nubs create a distinct tactile stimulus even where sensation has diminished.

For thin skin, it is replaced by a smooth ball. What else to consider is explained in the article Hand massage for seniors.
