Hamburg's well-known sights are on every list. This one collects places you only find on your second visit, and gives the reason why each is worth it. All eight are free or cost the price of a local transport ticket.
In the Harbour
- Ferry 62 instead of a harbour tour. Part of the public transport system, it passes the same quays and costs the regular fare. Almost empty in the early morning.
- The view from Steinwerder. Walk through the Old Elbe Tunnel to the south side and look back. The best skyline view of the city, and practically no one is there.
- The Kontorhausviertel. Since 2015, it has been part of the World Heritage site along with the Speicherstadt, but it is rarely visited. The Chilehaus, with its brick ship's bow, is more impressive from the outside than from the inside.
In the Green
The Jenischpark in Othmarschen is an English landscape park with old trees and an Elbe view, and even on busy Sundays, you can find an empty meadow there. Next door is the Botanical Garden in Klein Flottbek, free and even quieter.
The Öjendorfer Park in the east is larger than the city park and is practically never visited by tourists. If peace is your goal instead of sights, go there.
By the Water, Away from the Crowds
The Alsterwanderweg leads north out of the city from Winterhude, through green spaces, with exits at almost every bridge. It is the quiet alternative to the Outer Alster loop, which is crowded on weekends.
West of Teufelsbrück, the Elbe beach becomes narrow and empty. The section to Blankenese is the most beautiful of the whole path and the least visited, described in the article Elbe Beach in Hamburg.
When it Rains
The tropical greenhouses in Planten un Blomen are open year-round and free. They are the only warm, green indoor space in the center that you can enter without a ticket, and few people know about them.

What Time of Day Makes a Difference
Most insider tips in Hamburg are not unknown places, but known places at the right time. The Speicherstadt in the morning, the Plaza in the evening, the Elbe beach during the week.
Saturday between eleven and four o'clock is the worst time everywhere. Sunday morning before ten is the best, and this difference has a stronger effect than any choice of location.
The Tip for In Between
A sightseeing day rarely fails due to the program and mostly due to tired feet. If you take a real break in the afternoon instead of continuing to walk, you'll see more in the evening.

What You Can Save On
The fish market on Sunday morning is considered a must-do and is described by many as disappointing: crowded, loud, and more commercial than expected. If you want to see it, come before seven, otherwise it's not worth it.
And the Reeperbahn is an unspectacular street during the day. It works in the evening or not at all, and as a sight in a daytime program, it's a wasted hour.
