The Elbe beach stretches for several kilometers along the northern bank of the Elbe from Neumühlen to Blankenese. It is a real sand beach in the middle of a big city, with container ships instead of a horizon. The sections differ significantly, and those who choose the wrong one will be surprised by the crowd.
The sections from East to West
- Övelgönne. The most famous section, with the old pilot houses directly on the path. The busiest and closest to the city.
- Between Övelgönne and Teufelsbrück. Wide sand, less hustle and bustle, good seating.
- Teufelsbrück. Ferry pier, transition to Jenischpark, good turning point.
- West of Teufelsbrück to Blankenese. The quietest part, narrow in places, with the most beautiful view.
The path as a whole
From Neumühlen to Blankenese it's a good two-hour walk, almost continuously along the water. The surface alternates between sand, gravel, and paved path, so sturdy shoes are more sensible than sandals.
The direction matters. Walking westward, you head towards the sunset, and at the end is the Blankenese ferry pier for the return journey. Walking eastward, you have the city in front of you and the subway at the end.
Swimming: better not
At this point, the Elbe is a shipping lane with strong currents and tidal range. Passing container ships create waves that change the water level within seconds, and the current is dangerous even for good swimmers.
There is no supervision at the Elbe beach and no designated swimming area. Dipping feet in the water is common, swimming is not, and there's a good reason for that.
The ferry as a return journey
The HADAG ferries are part of the public transport system and cost the normal fare. Piers are available in Neumühlen, Teufelsbrück and Blankenese, among others, and that's exactly what makes route planning easy: you walk in one direction and take the ferry back.

When to come
Summer evenings are the best time because the sun sets over the Elbe. Saturday and Sunday from noon onwards, Övelgönne is busy, but west of Teufelsbrück it remains quiet even then.
In winter, the beach is almost empty and windy. Those who visit it then will get the clearest view of the year, but should know that it is regularly several degrees colder by the water than in the city center.
What to bring and what comes next
Something to drink, an extra jacket than you think, and sturdy shoes. There are restaurants in Övelgönne, Teufelsbrück, and Blankenese, but nothing in between for long stretches.

Grilling and fires
Grilling is not permitted everywhere on the Elbe beach, and regulations differ by section. Open fires are generally prohibited, disposable grills are the most common point of contention.
If you want to be sure, check beforehand instead of clarifying on site. And regardless of permission, what you bring, you take back. The beach has a visible litter problem in summer, and that doesn't happen by itself.
