HafenCity is Europe's largest inner-city urban development project and has been growing since the 2000s on former port land east of Speicherstadt. For visitors, this means: modern architecture right on the water, short distances, and a district that can be explored on foot in two to three hours.
What makes the district special
HafenCity is built on Warften, i.e., on artificially elevated plinths, because the area is not protected by dikes. That's why the streets are several meters above the promenades at the water, and that's why there are stairs leading down everywhere.
This is the practical difference to every other district: there are two levels. Traffic drives above, and you walk along the water below. If you only stay above, you'll miss half of it.
The destinations
- Elbphilharmonie. The Plaza at 37 meters is freely accessible; a time-slot ticket is recommended. From there, you can see the entire district from above.
- International Maritime Museum in Kaispeicher B, the oldest preserved warehouse in the city. Nine floors.
- Prototyp Museum, automotive history in an old warehouse building.
- Marco Polo Terraces and Magellan Terraces. Staircases leading to the water, in summer they are the living rooms of the district.
- Lohsepark. The large park of HafenCity, with the Hannoverscher Bahnhof memorial site on its edge.
A walking tour
From the Überseequartier subway station to the Magellan Terraces, from there westward along the water to the Elbphilharmonie, up to the Plaza, down again, and back across the Speicherstadt. Two hours with breaks, without a single meter of train travel.

Where the district reaches its limits
HafenCity is new, and you can feel it. There are fewer small shops and pubs than in Ottensen or Schanze, and in the evening it's quieter than its inner-city location might suggest. If you're looking for hustle and bustle, take two more stops.

The wind is also part of it. It blows strongly between the building blocks, and by the water, it's regularly several degrees cooler than in the city center. An extra jacket here is not caution, but experience.
A break in the district
A tour through HafenCity means stairs, cobblestones, and wind. After two hours, most people feel it in their legs, and that's the point where city trips can take a turn.

Directions and best time
The U4 goes directly there, stops Überseequartier and Elbbrücken. Driving is unattractive because parking is scarce and expensive, and the district is designed for walking anyway.
The best time is early summer evening, when the sun comes from the west over the Elbe and the terraces are bathed in light. The busiest time is Saturday afternoon, when Überseequartier with its shopping center is heavily frequented and the promenades are accordingly busy.
