A cushion for the neck is narrow and slightly curved, so that the massage heads can reach the muscles between the head and shoulders from the side. A cushion for the back is flatter and wider and is usually attached to the back of a chair with straps. If you only want to buy one device, decide by the spot where it niggles most often.
Two designs, two jobs
At first glance, massage cushions look similar. Inside, there are almost always two or four rotating massage heads that imitate a kneading movement. The difference lies in the shape of the housing, and the shape decides which spot the heads can reach at all.
The cushion for the neck
It is shaped like a flat U or a narrow arch. You place it behind your neck, and the heads press against the muscles from behind and slightly from the side. Many models have loops for your hands, so you can control the pressure yourself by pulling the cushion closer.
This shape also works for the shoulders, as long as it sits at the base of the neck. Lower down the back, a neck cushion no longer sits securely, because the shape finds no hold there.
The cushion for the back
It is flatter and wider. It is usually attached with one or two straps to the back of an office chair, armchair or car seat, so that it stays at the right height by itself. The heads then work against your back from behind, in the lower or middle area depending on the position.
Some back cushions can also be placed behind the neck. That works, but it is a compromise: the flat shape reaches the sides of the neck less well than a curved neck cushion.
What matters with both
A few features decide more about satisfaction than the design. Check these points in the data sheet before you order.
- Change of direction: Heads that regularly change their direction of rotation feel more even than those that only run one way.
- Heat: It works on the surface, and many people find it pleasantly loosening. What matters is that it can be switched off separately.
- Automatic shut-off: Many devices switch themselves off after a fixed time. This is a safety function, not a flaw.
- Cover: A removable, washable cover is more than a detail on a device that sits directly against your neck.
- Cable or battery: With a battery, the cushion can be moved freely. With a cable, it runs for as long as you like.
Where a cushion reaches its limit
A massage cushion works on one spot, not the whole back. If you want your neck, shoulders and lower back in one session, you have to move the cushion several times. For a larger area, a massage seat topper is the next step. It lies on the chair and covers the back from top to bottom.
A massage chair goes one step further. It guides the massage heads along a track following the spine and also massages the legs and feet. That is a different price bracket, but also a different kind of massage.
How to use the cushion
Start with the weakest level and without heat. Only increase it if the massage still feels pleasant after a few minutes. A session does not have to be long; short sessions during the day are usually more pleasant than one long one in the evening.
Never place the cushion directly on the larynx or the front of the neck. Blood vessels and nerves run close beneath the skin there, and that is exactly what the shape is not made for.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a neck cushion for my back too?
For the upper shoulders, yes. On the lower back, the curved shape finds no hold and slips. A flat cushion with straps is better suited for that.
Can I fall asleep with a massage cushion?
Better not. The automatic shut-off is a safeguard, not a free pass. If you fall asleep with the heat running, you risk skin irritation where the cushion rests.
When should I avoid a massage cushion?
With recent injuries, inflammation or an implanted device such as a pacemaker, ask your doctor first. The details are in When should you not use a neck massager.
Which cushion is right for me?
A detailed selection guide is in the massage cushion buying guide. You will find the current models under Massage cushions.
