When applied to muscles, a massage gun is safe for healthy adults. It becomes dangerous in three areas: over bones and joints, on the side and front of the neck, and over the abdomen, kidneys, and spine. In addition, there is a list of people who should not use it at all. Both lists and the reasons behind them are provided here.

What the device does technically

A massage gun strikes a small area with an attachment between 1,800 and 3,200 times per minute, with a stroke of about ten to sixteen millimeters. This force is its entire purpose: it reaches deeper than a hand. This is precisely why it is problematic in the wrong places.

The comparison helps with understanding: a neck device presses and kneads, a gun strikes. What this means in practice is explained in the article Neck Massager or Massage Gun.

Areas where not to work

  • The front and side of the neck. There, the carotid artery, larynx, and nerves lie directly under the skin. High-frequency strikes do not belong there.
  • Over bones and joints. Shin, elbow, kneecap, collarbone, spine. There is no padding in between.
  • The abdomen and kidney area. Internal organs are unprotected.
  • Back of the knee, groin, armpit. Blood vessels and lymph nodes run superficially there.
  • The head. Not even on a low setting.

Allowed areas are muscles: calves, thighs, glutes, back next to the spine, trapezius muscle between neck and shoulder, upper arms.

Who should not use it

  • In case of acute thrombosis or suspected thrombosis. The most important exclusion. Striking a clot is dangerous.
  • In case of severe varicose veins. See can you massage with varicose veins.
  • In case of osteoporosis. Reduced bone density cannot tolerate impacts, see massage chairs for osteoporosis.
  • In case of fresh injuries, bruises, strains. In the first few days, cool, do not work on it.
  • After operations, until the wound is closed and irritation-free. See massage after an operation.
  • When taking blood-thinning medications. Bruises occur much more easily.
  • During pregnancy without medical consultation.
  • In case of impaired sensation, for example due to nerve damage. Those who do not feel pain cannot use it as a boundary.

When to stop immediately

Stabbing or burning pain. Numbness or tingling that occurs during use. Dizziness. Blue discoloration of the skin. And anything that feels like bone instead of muscle.

A dull, slightly uncomfortable pulling sensation, however, is normal, as is redness that disappears after twenty minutes.

The three mistakes almost everyone makes

  • Too long in one spot. Fifteen to thirty seconds per point is enough. Two minutes on the same spot causes bruises.
  • Pressing too hard. The device works by frequency, not by pressure. You guide it, you don't press it.
  • Highest setting from the start. The strongest setting is intended for large, thick muscle groups, not for the neck.

The complete instructions are here: How to use a massage gun correctly.

What a device cannot replace

For pain with an unclear cause, for radiating pain in the arm or leg, and for complaints that persist for longer than two weeks, clarification should come first. A massage gun treats muscles, nothing else.

If there are no contraindications, the devices are available at Massage Guns, including the NAIPO Massage Gun. You can try it out at over 40 locations.

In short

  • Safe on muscles, dangerous over bones, joints, neck, abdomen, and kidneys.
  • Excluded for thrombosis, osteoporosis, fresh injuries, and blood thinners.
  • Fifteen to thirty seconds per point, guide instead of press.
  • Stop immediately with stabbing pain, numbness, dizziness, or blue discoloration.
  • If you cannot reliably feel pain, you should not adjust the device by feel.
