Depending on the program, a massage chair operates at a noise level between that of a refrigerator and a quiet conversation. You can watch TV next to it, but you can't talk on the phone without being noticed. The volume comes from three sources: the air compressor, the roller motors, and the track. Here's what each component causes, which noises are normal, and which indicate a defect.

Where the Noise Comes From

  • The Air Compressor. The loudest source. It inflates the airbags in the arms, shoulders, hips, and calves. You hear a steady pumping sound, plus a hiss when the air is released. Programs with a lot of air massage are therefore more audible than pure back programs.
  • The Roller Motors. A deep hum that increases with intensity. Tapping programs also add a rhythmic ticking sound that is transmitted through the backrest.
  • The Track. A quiet running sound as the roller unit moves up and down the back. With S- and L-tracks, you sometimes hear a short jolt at the transitions.
  • The Reclining Motor. Only when adjusting the backrest, but clearly audible.

In addition, there's the floor surface. A chair on laminate or tiles sounds louder than the same chair on carpet, because hard floors reflect the body sound.

What's Normal and What's Not

Normal sounds include steady pumping, hissing when deflating, humming of the motors, and a click at the end of a program when the roller unit returns to its starting position.

Abnormal sounds include: grinding or scratching that gets louder with each movement; a squeaking sound that sounds dry; a cracking sound under load; and a compressor that runs continuously even though no air program is active. Such noises should be checked, see Massage Chair Repair.

What You Can Do About the Noise

  • Decouple the Base. A felt mat or a flat rug under the chair's feet will reduce a noticeable amount of sound. This is the most effective single step.
  • Distance to the Wall. Directly against the wall, sound is reflected. Ten to fifteen centimeters are often enough.
  • Choose a Program. If you want quiet in the evening, choose a back program instead of a full-body program with a lot of air.
  • Reduce Intensity. The highest setting is also the loudest, and it's rarely the best.

Where the chair is best placed is described in detail in the article where to place a massage chair.

If Others Are Sleeping in the House

The practical question is usually: Can I still get into the chair at ten o'clock at night without waking anyone? In an apartment with normal walls, this is usually not a problem in the next room, but it's more likely to be an issue directly below in an old building, because the body sound travels through the ceiling. If you plan this, you should include a felt mat from the start.

If you want to do without noise altogether, you'll find models without a compressor among the smaller massage devices. They are significantly quieter, but only cover individual zones.

Listen Before Buying

Loudness is not reliably stated in any data sheet, and decibel figures are of little value without measurement conditions. The only reliable test is to listen: start a full-body program with air massage and talk normally. If you have to raise your voice, you'll know. Test sitting is free at over 40 locations, the models are shown in the overview.

In Short

  • A massage chair, depending on the program, operates between the noise level of a refrigerator and a quiet conversation.
  • The air compressor is the loudest, followed by the roller motors and the track.
  • Hard floors amplify sound; a felt mat underneath audibly reduces it.
  • Grinding, dry squeaking, and cracking under load are not normal noises.
  • The only reliable way to check this is by listening during a test sit.
