You rarely buy a massage chair twice. The decision almost always comes down to the same seven points, and the most important one is not on any datasheet: whether the chair fits your body. Here's what to look for when buying, what truly distinguishes the technology, and why a ten-minute test sit is more worthwhile than ten hours of research.
1. Fit over Technology
A massage chair moves its rollers along a fixed rail. If you sit too high or too low, the rollers will work on the back of your head instead of your neck, or on your lower back instead of your shoulder blades. No program can compensate for this. The crucial factor here is less the overall height than the ratio of torso to legs: two people who are 185 centimeters tall will sit differently if one has long legs and a short upper body. Therefore, height specifications are guidelines and not limits. Even at 190 centimeters and more, many chairs fit well; it depends on the model.
2. What differentiates 2D, 3D, and 4D
The number describes how many directions the massage rollers move in.
- 2D moves the rollers up, down, and sideways. Solid basic massage, usually in the more affordable range.
- 3D adds depth. The rollers extend further out of the backrest, allowing the pressure to be noticeably adjusted.
- 4D additionally changes speed and pressure within a movement. This makes the sequence feel smoother and less mechanical.
More dimensions mean more adjustment options, not automatically a more pleasant massage. A well-tuned 3D chair can feel better than a poorly tuned 4D chair.
3. The Space It Really Needs
Two measurements matter. First, the footprint when upright, and second, the distance to the wall the chair needs to recline. Many models are built as wall-huggers: they slide forward when reclining instead of tilting backward, and often require only a few centimeters of wall clearance. Before ordering, also measure the path into your home, including door widths, stairwells, and turns in the hallway. Depending on the model, a massage chair weighs well over 100 kilograms and cannot be tilted like a sofa.
4. Price Ranges and What They Mean

5. Delivery and Assembly
Massage chairs are delivered by freight forwarder, and an appointment is arranged. Clarify three things before purchasing: Will it be delivered to the room of installation or to the curb? Will the device be assembled and connected? Will the packaging be taken away? A chair standing in three boxes in the hallway is not yet a massage chair.
6. Service, Warranty, and Spare Parts
This is the point most easily overlooked during purchase and most urgently needed after three years. Ask specifically: Who repairs, where is it repaired, and how long does it take? 7. Specialist Store or Online
