For the neck, use the flat disc or the soft cushion attachment on the massage gun, at a low setting. Not the fork, not the cone. Only work on the muscle between the cervical spine and the shoulder, never on the front or sides of the neck. Here are the reasons and instructions.
Why the neck is a special case
There is little tissue between the skin and the cervical vertebrae. On the sides and front of the neck, the carotid artery, larynx, and nerves run directly under the surface. A device that pulses up to 3,200 times per minute has no business being there.
Furthermore, the neck is the region where most people feel tension, and thus the region most likely to be over-treated.
The right attachment
- Flat disc. Distributes the impact, gets close to the bone without hitting it. The standard choice.
- Cushion or foam damper. Even gentler, for beginners and sensitive people.
- Ball. Possible on the trapezius muscle towards the shoulder, where there is more tissue.
- Fork: no. It is designed for both sides of the spine, but the distance in the neck is too narrow.
- Cone: no. Too pinpoint for a region with so little padding.
What each attachment otherwise does is explained in the article Massage Gun Attachments.
Where to work and where not to
Permitted: the muscle strand to the left and right of the cervical spine, the trapezius muscle between the neck and shoulder, the shoulder blade region.
Not permitted: the cervical spine itself, the front of the neck, the sides of the neck, the base of the skull.

If you are unsure, do a simple test: what feels soft and movable under your fingers is muscle. What is hard is bone, and you should not work there.
The instructions in five steps
- Select the lowest setting, attach the flat disc.
- Tilt your head slightly to the opposite side, this relaxes the muscle.
- Place the device on the muscle, do not press. It works via frequency.
- Move slowly along the muscle, fifteen to thirty seconds per spot.
- A maximum of two minutes per side in total.
When you should use a different device
For widespread tension after screen work, a neck massager is the better choice: it holds itself, works evenly, and is designed to hardly hit critical areas. The distinction is explained in the article Neck Massager or Massage Gun, the causes in the article Neck Massager against Tech Neck.
When not at all
If you experience tingling or numbness in your arm or hand, dizziness, after a whiplash injury, with unexplained neck pain, and with anything that radiates into the head. The complete list is in the article when not to use a neck massager.
The devices can be found under Massage Guns, including the NAIPO Massage Gun, and area devices under Neck Massagers. You can try them out at over 40 locations.
Briefly summarized
- Flat disc or cushion, lowest setting.
- Fork and cone do not belong on the neck.
- Only work on muscle, never on the spine, front of the neck, or base of the skull.
- Maximum two minutes per side, guide rather than press.
- Do not use at all if you experience tingling in the arm, dizziness, or unexplained pain.
