When buying an electric back massager, there are four decisions to make, and they follow a logical order. First the zone, then the type, then the power supply, and finally the features. Those who start with the features end up buying a device with many programs that works on the wrong area.

First Decision: Which Zone

Upper back and shoulders, lower back, or the entire back. This question is more decisive than any technical specification, because different types of massagers target different zones.

If you're unsure, reach for the spot that hurts in the evening. If it's between the shoulder blades, a cushion is appropriate. If it's at the waist, a belt or a small device for the lower back. If the pain extends along the entire back, a mat is suitable.

Second Decision: Kneading, Tapping, or Vibrating

  • Kneading. Rotating Shiatsu nodes that grip tissue between them. This is the most powerful principle and has the deepest effect.
  • Tapping. Rapid, vertical strikes on the surface. Invigorating, more superficial than kneading.
  • Vibrating. Unbalanced motors that make the area oscillate. The gentlest, good for beginners and sensitive areas.

Most devices combine two principles. More important than the number of programs is that the main principle can be adjusted in intensity.

Third Decision: Mains or Battery

Mains operation provides consistently full power and is the right choice for a device that stays in a fixed location. The trade-off is the cable, and for car devices, an additional adapter for the twelve-volt connection.

Battery-powered devices are freely movable but lose power towards the end of the charge, and the operating time is usually twenty to forty minutes. This is sufficient for a desk, sofa, and travel bag. For daily use in a fixed armchair, mains operation is more convenient.

Fourth Decision: The Features

Only now is it worth looking at heat, timer function, adjustable node width, and zone selection. Two of these are not just conveniences but essential features: an automatic shut-off and overheating protection.

Everything else depends on usage. If you share the device with others, adjustability is needed. If you use it alone, it's less necessary. The selection can be found under Back Massagers, and why test reports are of little help is explained in the article Back Massager Test.

What Really Drives the Price

There's a multiple difference between a simple cushion and a fully equipped mat. The extra cost primarily pays for three things: quieter operation, adjustability, and gearbox durability. You usually don't get more power for it.

It's worth checking the warranty period. For a device with a motor and gearbox, it says more about the expected lifespan than any information about the number of massage nodes. A device that runs daily will have accumulated several hundred operating hours after two years.

The Most Common Bad Purchase

The most common mistake is buying a neck cushion when intending it for the lower back. This type of massager doesn't reach that zone, and no setting will change that. Which devices do reach that area is explained in the article Lower Back Massager.

The second most common bad purchase is a device with a fixed node width for a narrow back. The massage heads then run over the spine instead of alongside it. Before buying, therefore, it's worth looking at the adjustability specifications, not just the number of programs.
