A weekend in Hamburg works best if you take one area per day instead of three sights across the city. Between Blankenese and HafenCity is a good forty-five minute journey by bus and train, and these journeys are what eat up a day.
Saturday: Harbour and Speicherstadt
In the morning, take ferry 62 from Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder and back. It's part of the public transport system, costs the normal fare and is almost empty in the early morning.
Afterwards, walk to Speicherstadt, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015, along with the Kontorhausviertel. If you like model railways, plan a visit to Miniatur Wunderland here and book in advance. In the afternoon, visit the Elbphilharmonie Plaza, access is free, a timed ticket is recommended.
Saturday Evening
The Reeperbahn is unspectacular during the day and what it's known for in the evening. If you prefer something quieter, go to the Schanzenviertel or Ottensen, both with dense gastronomy and without the bustle of St. Pauli.
Between the afternoon program and the evening lies the point where most weekends collapse: your feet are tired, and instead of a break, you push through. Twenty minutes in the NAIPO Relax Lounge in HafenCity costs little time and saves the evening, without an appointment and without changing clothes.
Sunday: Elbe and Greenery
Sunday morning is the least busy time of the weekend. If you want to see the Fischmarkt, you have to be there before seven, otherwise it's not worth it.

Afterwards, the Elbe beach: from Övelgönne with the pilot houses westwards, to Teufelsbrück or further to Blankenese. The path runs almost continuously along the water, and the return journey can be shortened by ferry. If you want it quieter, take the Jenischpark and the Botanical Garden in Klein Flottbek instead.
If it rains
The rain plan doesn't replace the day, but only the area. Instead of the Elbe: Kunsthalle and Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe are both near the main station, minutes apart. Instead of the harbour: Speicherstadt and HafenCity have three indoor attractions within walking distance: Miniatur Wunderland, Maritime Museum and Prototyp Museum.

Three things to arrange beforehand
- Tickets for the Miniatur Wunderland and a time slot for the Plaza. Otherwise, both are booked out on weekends.
- A public transport day ticket. It is also valid on HADAG ferries, and that's exactly what makes the harbour trip affordable.
- An alternative within walking distance. The weather changes faster here than elsewhere, and a backup plan in the same district is worth more than a better one in another.

Arrival and getting around the city
If you come by train, you'll arrive at the main station, which is central. By car, a park-and-ride lot on the outskirts is more worthwhile than searching in the city centre, because parking fees there are quickly more expensive than a public transport ticket for two days.
Within the city itself, the subway, S-Bahn, bus and HADAG ferries are all covered by one fare. That's what makes the harbour trip so affordable: it's not an excursion, but a public transport journey.
What makes the weekend expensive and what doesn't
All parks, the Elbe beach, the Old Elbe Tunnel, the Plaza and the Botanical Garden are free. Museums, musicals, Miniatur Wunderland and wellness offers cost money.
A full weekend can be enjoyed for the price of two public transport day tickets if you stick to the water and greenery. This is unusual for a city of this size and the best reason to plan to be outdoors if in doubt.
