For healthy adults, a foot spa is harmless if three conditions are met: temperature below approximately thirty-eight degrees, duration under twenty minutes, and a clean device. It becomes risky with diabetes and impaired sensation, open wounds, acute thrombosis, and poorly cleaned devices. Here are the reasons and rules.

The three genuine risks

Scalding that no one notices. Those who can no longer reliably feel the temperature in their feet, for example due to nerve damage from diabetes, can suffer burns without noticing. Wounds on the foot heal slowly in this condition, and this quickly becomes a larger problem. This is the most common serious complication. More on this: are foot massagers suitable for diabetics.

Germs in stagnant water. Warm water in hoses and nozzles is a good breeding ground. Anyone who does not empty and dry their device after each use can contract athlete's foot and skin infections, especially with small injuries between the toes.

Electrics near water. A device with damaged cables does not belong near a water basin. Sounds obvious, but it's why these devices carry a test mark and should not be used after a fall.

For whom it is not suitable

  • Impaired temperature sensation in the feet, regardless of the reason.
  • Open sores, wounds, eczema, fungus. Warm water softens the skin and spreads germs.
  • Acute thrombosis or suspicion thereof. Heat dilates blood vessels, which is undesirable here.
  • Acute phlebitis. Warm and reddened means: do not warm.
  • Pronounced varicose veins. Not forbidden, but heat often intensifies the feeling of heaviness. See can you massage with varicose veins.
  • Pregnancy. Hot baths should be avoided, lukewarm is usually uncritical after consultation. See foot massager during pregnancy.

The right temperature

Thirty-five to thirty-eight degrees is the usual range. This feels pleasantly warm, not hot. If you cannot reliably assess the temperature, measure it with a thermometer or have a second person put their hand in. The elbow is a better test spot than the hand because it is more sensitive.

The same caution applies to heat as to chairs with heating functions: heat relaxes, but it also masks pain that would otherwise be a warning.

Hygiene that is really necessary

  • After each use, pour out the water, wipe out the basin, and let it air dry.
  • Regularly rinse nozzles and hoses; for devices with a circulation pump, descale according to instructions.
  • No additives that foam or oil, unless expressly permitted by the manufacturer. Oil can build up in pipes.
  • Do not share a device if there is athlete's foot in the family, without disinfecting it in between.

When to stop

Dizziness, palpitations, a tingling sensation that doesn't subside, or skin redness that remains after drying. After the bath, thoroughly dry your feet, especially between the toes, and examine your skin. If you bathe daily, you should check daily.

For duration, the same framework applies as for electrical devices: how long you can use a foot massager. Dry alternatives without water are available under massagers, try them out at over 40 locations.

In short

  • Harmless for healthy adults at under 38 degrees, under 20 minutes, and with a clean device.
  • The biggest risk is scalding with impaired sensation, for example with diabetes.
  • Stagnant warm water is a breeding ground, so empty and dry after each use.
  • Do not use with open wounds, acute thrombosis, and acute phlebitis.
  • After the bath, dry your feet and examine your skin, especially between the toes.
